Work to clear debris from Supertech twin towers’ site may restart soon

NOIDA: The notice to restart work on clearing debris from the site of twin towers’ demolition in
Sector 93A may be issued soon as the second report on noise pollution in the area has been
finalised, Noida Authority officials said on Monday, indicating that they could set a mid-March
deadline for completion.
Work to remove the debris and breaking the basement raft was first put on hold in December
2022, when an NCR-wide construction ban was enforced due to high air pollution.
Later, the company that brought down the towers last August was asked to halt work again after
studies found that decibel levels were well beyond permissible limits. Officials said that UP
Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), in its latest survey, found that sound levels are still around 10
decibels higher than the 55dB cut-off for residential areas.

“This can be managed and noise can be brought down using sound barriers. Work cannot be
postponed indefinitely. The UPPCB report will be tabled before senior authority officials in a
couple of days, and subsequently, a notice would be issued to Supertech (for restarting work),”
an official said.
He added that Supertech builder of Emerald Court society, where the towers were located —
may be given a new deadline of March 15. According to its contract with Supertech, the
demolition company Edifice Engineering is responsible for clearing the site of the razed towers.
Edifice officials could not be reached for comment till Monday evening.
The towers were brought down on August 28, 2022, in the largest such exercise carried out in
India. The top court had given a three-month window to remove the rubble, but that deadline
was not met due to the construction ban. After complaints of noise pollution, work was again
halted, prompting Noida Authority to bring in UPPCB and revise the deadline to February-end.
