Uttar Pradesh government plans Olympic Village with 5,000 flats near Noida airport

NOIDA: UP has drawn up the first contours of an ambitious Olympic Park near the upcoming Noida
International Airport, whose development will match the country’s infrastructure ambitions as it seeks a
larger place for itself in global affairs and comes close on the heels of the Centre expressing its intent to
throw an Indian city’s hat into the ring to host the world’s biggest sporting event in 2036.
Nearly 1,100 acres have been earmarked for the Olympic Park in Sector 22 of the Yamuna Expressway in
the 2041 Master Plan.
Noida Olympic Village to have 5,000 housing units
One of the two components of the park will be an Olympic City that will take up the lion’s share of the
park’s area — 965 acres — earmarked for the park, with 29 arenas dedicated to different Olympic sports to be built there.

Additionally, it is proposed to have sports clubs, training and coaching centres, convention centres, malls
and theme parks. Also proposed is an Olympic Village that will come up on 130 acres and have 5,000
housing units, primarily 3&4-BHK flats.
The residential enclave will be designed to provide accommodation to participants and others associated
with sporting events. Senior officials said the development plan of the Olympic Park was not likely to
match with a 2036 timeline for hosting the Games, should India indeed go for it, but the facility would be
on a par with the best in the world when it comes up.
“The planning of this park has been done with a belief that it will become the main sports arena should
India get a chance to host the Olympics or any other international sports event beyond 2041,” said Arun
Vir Singh, CEO of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority. “What will set it apart
from the world-class stadiums in Delhi is the sports cluster with 29 stadiums,” he added.
While the park is likely to be developed over several years, a “sequential and logical phasing” of
development and infrastructure will be necessary to minimise uncertainty and improve the economic
feasibility of the project, the CEO said. Though YEIDA is yet to finalise the mode of construction,
officials said the public-private partnership (PPP) model is best suited for developing any international
sports facility. The UP government has planned several big projects with the airport in Jewar at the centre
in the Yamuna Expressway region, among them the Film City and industrial manufacturing clusters like
the toy, apparel and medical devices parks.
