Uttar Pradesh cabinet’s nod for acquiring land for phase 3 & 4 of Noida airport
NOIDA: The UP cabinet on Friday approved the land acquisition for the third and fourth phases
of the Noida international airport. Officials said 2,054 hectares would be acquired across 10
villages for these two phases.
By 2070, the airport will have six runways and four terminal buildings with a capacity to cater to
225 million passengers annually and handle 10 million tonne of cargo.
There is also a plan to build an aviation hub across 700 hectares for manufacturing aircraft
engines and other parts.
“With the latest cabinet decision, the government has made the provisions of land for all four
phases till 2070. In the third and fourth phases, 1,318 and 735 hectares will be acquired,
respectively. A major portion of it will be used for the aviation hub,” said Arun Vir Singh, the CEO
of Noida International Airport Ltd, the government’s special purpose vehicle for the project.
While 1,334 hectares has already been handed over to the concessionaire – Zurich AG – for the
construction of the first phase of the airport, the acquisition process for 1,365 hectares for the
second phase is underway.
The first phase of the airport will have one runway, an air traffic control unit and a terminal
building with a capacity to cater to 12 million passengers annually. The UP government is
pushing for their completion by December next year, which is well before the October 2024
commissioning deadline for the mega project. The first expansion of the airport – construction of
the second runway and the terminal building – will start once it reaches 80% of the 12 million
passenger capacity.
Singh
said the acquisition process for the third and fourth phases would start in a month. “A proposal
will be prepared and sent to the state government for approval. Around Rs 12,000-15,000 crore
will be spent on land acquisition and rehabilitation of the displaced villagers. According to
norms, 10% of the amount will be deposited into the account of the additional district magistrate
(land) to start the process of acquisition. Subsequently, a drive will start to take consent of the
affected families,” he added.
“It will be the largest airport in Asia in the coming years. In the total area of 4,752 hectares,
there will not only be an international airport, but also a cargo hub, an MRO facility and an
aviation manufacturing hub. At present, aircraft parts are manufactured outside India. Through
the aviation hub, the government will attract prominent manufacturing companies to set up
factories here,” Singh explained.
In terms of capacity, the airport will cater to 30 million passengers by 2030, 50 million by 2036,
70 million by 2040, 100 million by 2042, 140 million by 2049, 160 million by 2060 and 225 million
by 2070, according to Singh.
Similarly, the cargo capacity will also increase to 3 million tonne by 2042, 4.5 million by 2049,
6.5 million by 2060 and 10 million by 2070.
