Dues mount, just 7,800 owe Gurugram civic body Rs 700 crore in property tax

GURUGRAM: MCG has prepared a list of 7,800 property tax defaulters with dues above Rs 1
lakh. These defaulters altogether owe the corporation around Rs 700 crore. The civic body will
soon launch a special campaign for the recovery of the dues, officials said.
Revenue from the property tax for the 2022-23 fiscal year was estimated to be Rs 1,100 crore,
but MCG has been able to generate only Rs 154 crore in the last nine months. Property tax is
one of the major sources of income for MCG, which is estimated to generate an income of Rs
3,000 crore in 2022-23.
Emphasising that the corporation needs to focus on generating more revenue, MCG
commissioner PC Meena in a meeting on Monday had directed taxation department officials to
prepare a list of property tax defaulters with dues above Rs 1 lakh. The department was also
asked to make a list of the top 100 defaulters so that the dues can be recovered from them. The
move aims to give a boost to revenue.
Meena said property owners can avail a rebate of 50% on the tax, if paid by January 31.
“Residents can pay property tax online through netbanking, debit and credit cards. Moreover,
property tax can also be paid at the citizen facilitation centres set up at the MCG office in Sector
42 and Civil Lines. At these centres, one can pay up to Rs 5,000 in cash and payments above
Rs 5,000 can be made through demand drafts and debit cards. If the owners don’t pay the tax
on time, the properties of such defaulters will be sealed and can’t be sold or given on lease,”
said the MCG commissioner.

For residential properties with a plot size of up to 300 square yards, the property tax rate is Re 1 per
sq yard. For plots ranging from 301 sq yards to 500 sq yards, the property tax is Rs 4 per sq
yard, while it is Rs 6 per sq yard for plots of 501 sq yards to 1,000 sq yards.
Moreover, owners have to pay Rs 7 per sq yard for plots from 1,001 sq yards to two acres, and
Rs 10 per sq yard for plots spread over two acres of land or more.
For apartments with a carpet area of up to 2,000 sq feet, the property tax is 50 paisa per sq ft.
For flats with a carpet area of 2,001 to 5,000 sq feet, it is Rs 1.2 per sq ft, while the tax rate is
Rs 1.5 per sq ft for flats with a carpet area of more than 5,000 sq ft.
