Despite curbs, construction in full swing in many areas in Gurugram

GURUGRAM: Despite the ban on construction activities under the GRAP-3 regulations implemented by CAQM on Saturday with an immediate effect, the first day saw a very subdued effect of restrictions.

While major road construction activities were put on halt, private construction activities continued unabated.

Spot visits to multiple locations such as Sector 7, Sadar Bazaar, Pataudi road, and New Railway Road, among others, revealed that many contractors were unaware of the ban and were awaiting directions from their seniors and civic authorities.

“We don’t know about any construction ban. And if there’s a ban, it might be on big projects. I don’t think so that minor construction work, such as house construction has been put on hold. If it has been, nobody has informed us about it,” said Ramji, a sub-contractor at New Railway Road.

A few, however, asserted that since the ban was imposed late in the evening without any prior hint, it will take a day or two for them to wind up the work and comply with the restrictions.

“I came to know about the ban today morning itself from the owner. He directed me to quickly wrap the work and send the labours back. I’ll try to wrap up the work by the end of the day or latest by tomorrow before completely shutting down the work,” said Giriraj, a contractor at Pataudi road.

Meanwhile, the district administration on Sunday noted that strict action will be taken against the defaulters.

“All construction activities are banned from hereon until further notice and all the concerned agencies have been directed to send reports of compliance,” said the deputy commissioner of Gurgaon, Nishant Kumar Yadav.
