Delhi civic body starts drive over property tax dues

NEW DELHI: Initiating a drive against major property tax defaulters who haven’t paid despite
repeated notices, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) sealed two properties in Raja
Garden on Tuesday.
“The property tax department of the west zone sealed two complexes at Shivaji Place and
District Centre for defaulting on property tax amounting to approximately Rs 9 crore. The
department gave ample opportunities to the builders to clear their dues pending since 2006-07,”
said an official. The drive will continue, he added.
MCD targets to collect Rs 3,850 crore in property tax in the financial year 2022-23 and only Rs
1,671 crore has been collected. Last year, it collected around Rs 2,000 crore.

“Our teams are prompting people to take advantage of the Samriddhi scheme under which
residential properties can settle all dues for the current and previous five years. For commercial
properties, a person can pay the principal for the past six years and get a waiver,” said the
official.
A scrutiny of long-time defaulters in residential areas is under process. “We are also meeting
government institutions and recently got Rs 6 crore from Food Corporation of India.”
